Despite being a classic of the genre, Piazzola’s El Gran Tango is different. The composer intersperses episodes of great romantic lyricism with rhythm and sound parts typical of tango. However, these contrasts do not prevent the piece to transmit tango character and feelings, supported by the rhythmic pulse and melodic phrasing. The milonga rhythm appears from the beginning and, unlike tango, it is more syncopated. The composition is divided into two main parts. The first one, made of variations, is characterized by Piazzola’s romantic lyricism and proper tango. The second one dispels these contrasts to maintain tango’s dynamic expressiveness right to the end, inviting us not only to dance, but also to feel.
