One of three brief pieces with two contrastive parts, based on French Counter Dance that was taken to Cuba by emigrant colonists coming from Haiti since 1791 due to the movement caused by slave rebellion. Ignacio Cervantes composes these dances around the middle 19th century, when counter dance is ‘Cubanized’ with rhythm elements of Creole music. It is divided into two sections: a more romantic and lyrical one –the first one– and a more syncopated and almost danceable part –the second one. It could be said that this was the first Creole genre within concert music in Cuba. Dance interpretation hides a small story with Cuban characters and situations, expressing the lively, bright and transcendental character of the isle. Cervantes’ Cuban dances are small liveliness sparkles.
